Determine Your "Then What" of Graduate School

Welcome to the August edition of the GradSchool Fully Funded newsletter. This newsletter is my monthly conversation with you about all things graduate school admissions. If you aspire to attend graduate school in the United States to obtain a master's or PhD, and to do so with full funding, then you are in the right place. Purpose in Graduate School Admission: Your "Then What"

In the last edition of the newsletter I started a conversation about purpose in graduate school admission, particularly your "what and "why." This is so important that in GradSchool Fully Funded, our grad school admissions coaching program, we begin with an emphasis on purpose.

Purpose is one of the three pillars in our framework in GradSchool Fully Funded. In addition to your "what and why," you also need to determine your "then what," which I will focus on today.

By "then what" I mean what you plan to do after obtaining your degree -- how you envision the next phase of your career beyond graduate school.

While graduate school will afford you the opportunity to learn and grow and will inform your "then what," it is important that you start grad school with at least a sketch of your end goal in mind.

This allows you to approach every course, project, interaction, and learning opportunity with that goal in mind. In order to do this, before you apply to graduate school you should ask yourself a few questions like:

  • What kind of degree do I want - a professional degree or an academic degree?
  • Where do I want to work - in academia, in government, doing applied or theoretical research, mostly teaching, or working in policy or advocacy?
  • Do I need a master's degree or a PhD to do the kind of work I have determined in the preceding question?

Thoughtful consideration to these questions will make you a stronger applicant. It will help you determine if the graduate programs to which you plan to apply are a good fit for your goals.

In turn, you will be in a better position to articulate that you are a good fit for your chosen programs, thus increasing your chances of gaining admission and funding.
