Determine Your "What" and "Why" of Graduate School

Welcome to the July edition of the GradSchool Fully Funded newsletter. This newsletter is my monthly conversation with you about all things graduate school admissions. If you aspire to attend graduate school in the United States to obtain a master's or PhD, and to do so with full funding, then you are in the right place. And if not but you know someone who does, please feel free to share this with them.

Every month we will discuss at least one thing that will help you along that path. As a newsletter subscriber, you will also get access to exclusive special offers and discounts.

Purpose in Grad School Admission: Your "What and "Why

Today I want to talk purpose in grad school admission, particularly your "what and "why." This is so important that in GradSchool Fully Funded, our grad school admissions coaching program, we begin with an emphasis on purpose.

Purpose is one of the three pillars in our GradSchool Fully Funded framework. To determine your purpose, you have to determine your "what" and "why." What do you want to study and why do you want to study it? These two questions deserve answers based on deep thought and exploration beyond a cursory response.

It is not enough to simply know what subject and degree such as a PhD in chemistry, but you need to determine what kind of chemist you want to be, what you want to specialize in, why, and what you expect to do with your studies.

Not only will answers to these questions help you craft a compelling narrative in your application personal statement, but it will also help you enter graduate school more focused, and more likely to succeed. Additionally, It will help you determine what I call your "then what" -- how you envision the next phase of your career beyond graduate school.

I will discuss the idea of "then want" in more detail in the next edition of the newsletter. In the meantime, I'd like to hear from you. What is your "what" and "why" for grad school admission?
