The best application timeline for Grad Schools in the U.S.
Here are some thoughts about the grad school admission calendar.
- The best time to apply to grad school is when the schools indicate you should, but generally, it's in the fall of one academic year to start the following fall semester.
- This means for 2024, you apply starting in September/October of 2024 to start in August/September of 2025.
- The application deadlines will typically run from October to February for competitive programs that are fully funded.
- The U.S. academic year typically runs from August/September to May/June, with most grad programs lasting nine months.
- Grad programs offering full funding usually only admit and fund students who start in the fall semester.
- Therefore, you have until September of the year you apply to prepare application requirements (GRE/GMAT, TOEFL, recommendations, transcripts) if you plan on applying to schools with the earliest deadlines.
- If your deadline is later, such as February, then you have a little bit more time.
- The graduate school application process requires significant planning and understanding of the U.S. academic calendar.
- GradSchool Fully Funded provides guidance for navigating the application process, including personalized timelines and application roadmaps.
